Who Are the Baha'is?

The Baha'is are a family of every nationality, every language, every ethnic, cultural, and religious tradition.  They can be found in every country and territory throughout the entire planet.  Baha'is are individuals who have recognized that Baha'u'llah is the Voice of God to humanity for this era and they are people who are trying to live their lives and shape their characters according to His teachings.  It is only in relation to the Creator, and the purpose which that Creator has fixed for His creatures, that human existence has any meaning. Bahá'u'lláh described God's purpose for man in the following way:

"The purpose of God in creating man hath been, and will ever be, to enable him to know his Creator and to attain His Presence. To this most excellent aim, this supreme objective, all the heavenly Books and the divinely-revealed and weighty Scriptures unequivocally bear witness."

Bahá'u'lláh explained that the fundamental, spiritual role of religion is to enable people to achieve a true understanding of their own nature and of God's will and purpose for them. The spiritual teachings sent down by God through the Messengers or Manifestations of God serve to guide us to a proper comprehension of the spiritual dynamics of life. These principles enable us to understand the laws of existence. Moreover, the very efforts we must make to conform to the teachings of the Manifestations serve to develop our spiritual capacities. For example, when one makes an effort to rid oneself of prejudice and superstition in response to the teachings of Bahá'u'lláh, the result is an increased knowledge of and love for other human beings, and this, in turn, helps the individual to live life more effectively.

An important part of following the Baha'i teachings is serving our fellow humans.

“Service to humanity is service to God. Let the love and light of the Kingdom radiate through you until all who look upon you shall be illumined by its reflection. Be as stars, brilliant and sparkling in the loftiness of their heavenly station.”

The Baha'is are engaged in service projects in local communities all over the world with other Baha'is and with anyone who wants to participate in making their neighborhoods and communities more spiritual places.  There are many such projects in the Washington County (Oregon) area.  Some are listed in the Neighborhood Activities link in the left hand column.
